ADE - What's all the Fuss about?
A guide to ADE 2017 by Djeepo -
This week, starting the 18th of October, Amsterdam will be the scene for one of the world’s largest and most highly visited electronic music festivals but also for the music industry’s biggest professional conference. Whether you’re an Amsterdam local, a tourist on a cultural trip or a die-hard music fan who flew from the other side of the globe to take part in this madness week, the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) has something to offer to each and everyone. We selected a couple of high quality events for you.
ADE's prime appeal is simply due to its incredible size. From Wednesday until Monday,
over 150 clubs, bars, art spaces, shops and more unconventional locations will host a variety of international
and local artists performing everything from DJ sets and live shows to concerts
and exhibitions. Musically speaking, ADE covers an extremely wide musical
spectrum, ensuring that there’s something to fit everybody’s taste.
We will
take a look at some of the most exciting events that will take place next week:
Wednesday 18th
Starting off on
Wednesday, I recommend to first catch the atmosphere of this wonderful
festival. So, take a stroll through the streets of Amsterdam while looking out
for the yellow ADE logo. Branded flags, cubes and posters usually indicate location that host interesting
events and with so many interesting ones going on, chances are you’ll stumble
onto cool low-key DJ performance in a clothing store or a talk-show by another
famous producer on a rooftop bar. Half the fun of ADE is roaming around the
city and letting luck guide you and meeting some of the 375.000 festival
visitors, you never know what or who you’ll encounter.
Do make of point of passing by Rush Hour around 7pm who will host трип, Nina Kraviz’s label. Famous for its dark and mysterious blend of techno, this record shop will surely be buzzing with music enthusiast. Bring some beers and join the dance!
If this little
teaser has left the right taste in your mouth and you’re feeling like you want
more, I have two recommendations for closing the night in style. On one hand,
if you prefer to keep things light and funky, you should hit up new-comer club
Claire when they host Kerri Chandler. Accompanied by some of Amsterdam’s most
respected selectors, this house music pioneer and living legend will make sure
to get your feet moving while introducing you to the roots of electronic music.
Claire: Kerri
Chandler from 11pm - 6am
If,
on the other hand, you’re not afraid to go a little harder, consider heading
West to one of Amsterdam’s most iconic party location, the Gashouder. A former
gas tank of epic turned into music venue of epic proportions famous for the Awakenings
events hosted there, partying there tends to take your breath away. On
Wednesday, you can expect a techno masterclass from international heavy-weights
such as Len Faki, Kink and US legends Jeff Mills and Robert Hood.
If you’ve
enjoyed that trip to Rush Hour, try giving another one of Amsterdam’s many
record shops a try. As a pilgrimage spot for numerous music enthusiasts, record
shops will always provide you with heaps of fun and entertainment. On Thursday,
you’ve again got a number of options. You could head over to Bordello A Parigi and
check out their Spagetti
Disco Exhibition curated by Lorenzo
Cibrario while sipping some cold drinks and listening to an impressive cast
featuring Afrobot, Job Jobse, Intergalactic Gary and many more. This one is
bound to get out of hand, big tip!! Bordello
A Parigi: Every Day From 3pm - 7pm
If you still haven’t had your dose of record shops, here’s some more. On Thursday afternoon, Amsterdam institution Red Light Radio is hosting well respected label Music From Memory in their newly opened store. Expect quality yet unexpected sounds while surrounding yourself with finest Amsterdam has to offer!
At this point of
the week, you probably have seen quite some things in Amsterdam. But worry
not because ADE still has a couple of aces up its sleeve! Come in Audio
Obscure with an event like no other:
While
lots of parties surrounding ADE can compete with scintillating line-ups, none
comes even close in terms of location as Audio Obscura invites you to the
Rijksmuseum’s Bike passage to start off your night. A truly one-of-a-kind
experience in a breath-taking location, Underworld’s visit to Amsterdam isn’t
one to miss. While entry is technically free, getting a ticket depends on your
luck. Sign up on the website to enter the lottery for one of the 3000 tickets,
and hopefully you’ll land yourself a spot in at this highly coveted party!
Still
standing? I think you deserve some applause for that you rave warrior! And now
on to the next one! This time we’re hitting up a regular Amsterdam residence as
Operator, an up and coming online radio based in Rotterdam, takes over a full
house for an afternoon of laughs, dance, drinks with a cast of their favourite
selectors. Drop by or tune in online for a no-fuss afternoon! Operator: Live From
2pm – 10pm
At night, we’ll then
head to another famous Amsterdam Institution, Radion, for a Resident Advisor
special.
Here you can expect an eclectic musical journey that will take you from upbeat and cheesy disco past some high-energy house all the way to banging techno and with high calibre performances from the likes of Ben UFO and Izabel, an exceptional venue and a top-notch organiser, you couldn’t be in better hands!
Resident Advisor: Radion From 11pm - 8am

And
you’re still looking for more after 4 days of madness? Worry not, I got you
covered! And I suggest you end your ADE experience with style and panache. Who
better suited for this than Job Jobse and what better place than the A’dam Loft
right across from Centraal Station. With a panoramic view over Het Ij, dreamy
tunes from the De School resident (and a still unknown mystery guests), we
can’t imagine many better places to finish your ADE experience while dancing
the night away as you soak in the first rays of sunshine!
